The Islamic State, ISIS, has claimed responsibility for the Easter Sunday bombings which rocked hotels and Churches in Sri Lanka.
This was made known by the group’s Amaq news agency via a statement which says:
“The perpetrators of the attack that targeted nationals of the countries of the coalitions and Christians in Sri Lanka before yesterday are fighters from the Islamic State”
The blasts carried out by the ISIS suicide bombers killed over 300 people with about 500 critically injured.
According to a government official, the bombings were a retaliation for the killing of about 50 people in a Mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand.
Sri Lanka’s highest-ranking Roman Catholic official, the archbishop of Colombo, chastised the government for not taking precautions despite it being warned that terrorists were planning to stage an attack on Churches.
