The Portuguese received a frosty reception at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium due to his nine-year spell at the Bernabeu, with Atletico’s home support booing and jeering him throughout. Ronaldo responded to their taunts during the game as he held up five fingers to the crowd, signifying the five Champions League titles he has won down the years, compared to Atleti’s none.
It was Atletico supporters who got the last laugh, though, as a pair of scrappy goals from centre-backs Jose Gimenez and Diego Godin gave the home side a two-goal advantage heading into the second leg in Turin – and the second effort actually deflected in off Ronaldo. Ronaldo’s long-range free-kick was the closest the striker got to scoring but his powerful strike was comfortably saved by Jan Oblak.
