A Bank of America ATM in a neighborhood mistakenly spit out $100 bills instead of $20 and the bank has asked lucky customers that took part in the bounty to keep the change.
The frenzy erupted at about 11 p.m. Sunday when a customer went to the Bank of America ATM at FM 1960 and Interstate 45 to withdraw $20.
However, the customer said he received a $100 instead. The customer posted the incident, which caused a bit of a stir, and before anyone knew it there were cars lined up for a chance at free cash and even a dust up or two erupting.
The incident went on for several hours, with police being called to the area to disperse the crowd and guard the ATM until it was deactivated.
Initially, there were reports that those customers would be charged, even though it was a mistake and a malfunction.
Bank of America released a statement Monday afternoon that read:
“This was an incident at a single ATM in Houston caused when a vendor incorrectly loaded $100 bills in place of $10 bills. We have resolved the matter. Customers will be able to keep the additional money.”
