The Governor of Lagos State, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, said on Monday that his administration has always respected the principle of separation of powers among the three arms of government and will continue to do so.

Ambode said his belief was that each of the three arms of government had to act within the limits of their constitutionally-defined powers for peace to reign in the country.

The governor said this on Monday in his speech during the 2018/2019 Lagos State Judiciary Legal Year Service held at the Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina.

The Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Opeyemi Oke, led the 58 high court judges and 122 magistrates in the state to the service, which was attended by Senior Advocates of Nigeria, other lawyers; as well as a former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Mrs Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire; and the Ayangburen of Ikorodu and his chiefs.

Ambode, in his speech, praised the judges for their diligence and hard work, pledging that his administration would continue to support and partner the judiciary in the new legal year.

He said, “As we begin another judicial year, I assure you of my continued support and partnership.

“Our administration recognises the separate but interwoven roles of the three arms of government. And part of our own commitment to a lawful and orderly society is to respect constitutionally defined limits. This, we have always done.

“One of the cardinal policies of our government has always been the enthronement of the law and order.

“Today, I stand a happy man knowing we delivered on those promises.”
