Shingles: What Causes It and How to Prevent It

Shingles is nerve pain and a rash caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. If you’ve had chickenpox in the past, you could get shingles. Early symptoms include burning pain, tingling and discoloration. You might get a headache or fever not long before the rash appears.

Causes

Initial Infection: When you catch chickenpox (usually during childhood), your immune system eventually clears the active illness, but the virus itself never completely leaves your body.

Dormancy: The virus moves into the nerve tissues near your spinal cord and brain, where it stays inactive (dormant) and hidden for decades.

Reactivation: If the virus wakes up later in life, it travels along the nerve pathways down to your skin, causing the painful shingles rash.

Medical Conditions: Diseases that attack the immune system (like HIV/AIDS or cancer) make reactivation much more likely.

And finally ,shingles vaccine may help prevent shingles. People who are eligible should get the Shingrix vaccine, always contact your healthcare provider for proper treatment. Information are gotten from Mayo clinics.
